The lab in Berkeley, which Leemans headed for years

Wim Leemans, who graduated from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences at the VUB, becomes director of the accelerator division of Deutsches Elektronen-Synchroton (DESY), one of the world’s leading particle accelerators. He returns from the United States, where he worked for 27 years at the Berkeley Lab. He created the laser accelerator program of the lab and went on to achieve several scientific breakthroughs with it. His arrival at DESY is considered a major event. “This is an enormous boost for DESY, the Helmholtz Association and German science as a whole,” says Professor Helmut Dosh, Chairman of the Board of DESY.
