Those of you still unaware of the various fitness options and campus sporting competitions, it is time to take note. Student organisations can once again partake in the student Sports Trophy contest starting from 19 October. In addition, the staff and student indoor football match is back on, both in Jette and Etterbeek. The more elite in sports can sign up for the VUB team representing our community in the interuniversity competition Student Sports Flanders. Here the fittest of sports lovers have the chance to take one or two days per academic year to shine and represent their Alma Mater. Something to consider!

Fitness freaks can also still join Basic Fit, which gives VUB students and staff a discount of 50% when signing up for the ‘full option’ membership. This affordable membership gives access to all the European Basic Fit branches. Those who prefer to "sport and play’’ can enjoy the affordable fitness option of the VUB-sports card that includes a mix of sports. A card costs only €7,5 and offers a five year access to all campus sports and infrastructure facilities. For example, you can combine jogging and squash activities, rent a campus sporting facility at discount prices, or just preload your card with a ‘Sportknip’ to participate in any of the Sport!Mix activities. A sportknip costs €22.50 for VUB staff and students, €45 for alumni and partner institutions and €90 for external participants. It gives access to 25 different sports to choose from during the study weeks of the academic year.

Sport!Mix from a pool of 25 sports

The Sport!Mix is an option offered by the Student Services and Sports in collaboration with private Brussels fitness clubs. So even without the watersports on campus the range of activities is impressive: from martial arts to football, from table tennis to bodymix. The rugby field on the Brussels Humanities, Science & Engineering Campus offers not only rugby but also the Celtic squatters Hurling and Gaelic football. In Jette there is a varied selection of Sport!Mix deals where you can play badminton to your heart’s content, basketball, volleyball, indoor football, … together with your friends.

There is therefore little excuse this winter to become a couch potato. Apart from the regular fitness offers, the Student Sports Services host various events throughout the year and organise health campaigns. Sitting still is clearly not one of their ‘virtues’, despite the large crane blocking their driveway.
