Science has always been of the utmost importance for the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. ‘Free Inquiry’ is one of the university’s basic principles, which means conducting research without any kind of bias. Philosopher and mathematician Henri Poincaré summarized this principle during an inspiring speech at our university in 1909.

In the spirit of our international university, we would like to share Poincaré’s quote in various languages on our campus. The translations were performed by students, staff and other sympathizers. We would like to thank our community for making this possible. Enjoy the result on the wall between the restaurant and building G on the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus.

The quote

“Thinking must never submit itself,

neither to a dogma,

nor to a party,

nor to a passion,

nor to an interest,

nor to a preconceived idea,

nor to anything whatsoever,

except to the facts themselves,

because for it to submit to anything else would be the end of its existence.”
