UNESCO plans to make the event annual with the intention to raise global visibility to the central role that light and photonics play in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, technology, culture, education, and sustainable development.

VUB B-PHOT Science Show Photonics
Every year VUB B-PHOT Brussels Photonics welcomes over 1300 students from secondary schools to the Photonics Science Show at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel for a lively and interactive show, where young minds dive into the world of photons.

In the 30 minutes version of the Science Show Photonics at the International Day of Light, young researchers and students from Vrije Universiteit Brussel B-PHOT will unravel and explain the magic of optical fibres and their many uses and applications.  Vibrant and entertaining on-stage presentations will be accompanied by an accessible and educational narrative that will explain and the unique properties of light and how photonics is applied in medicine, airplanes, robotics, telecommunication, and smart structures.

By performing this science show on stage at the IDL 2018 inauguration, B-PHOT wants to motivate all scientists and engineers to continue to invest in outreach activities and encourage young people to choose for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and more specifically for Photonics as a field of study and profession, because there is a growing need for passionate scientists and engineers.
