Snowden is wanted in the United States for violation of the Espionage Act. As an employee of the National Security Agency, he passed information on secret surveillance programs to a number of journalists, thus laying the foundations for revealing articles in a.o. The Guardian and The Washington Post. He then fled to Latin America and stranded in Russia. In January 2017, the Russian government extended his asylum with three years. In the US, he is facing a 30-year prison sentence.
This session is dedicated to the investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker Gavin McFadyen wo died last October. He was the director and founder of the Centre for Investigative Journalism in London. In 2015, he was a guest speaker on Difference Day and he introduced the biopic on Edward Snowden, ‘Citizenfour’ by Laura Poitras.
